Halloween Candy Calories and Exercises to Burn It Off

With Halloween night right around the corner, you may find yourself staring at the designated Halloween candy aisle in the grocery stores, maybe even picking up a few bags for...the kids...definitely just for the kids.  I’ve been there. What started as candy for the kids and their friends to pass out on Halloween night turned into having a piece here and there until no candy was left.  Now, don’t get me wrong, at Burn Fat and Feast, we are all about feasting, as long as it is done intentionally.  When you know what you are choosing, you can choose wisely. When you choose to eat some Halloween candy, it is important to know how many calories you are actually consuming and how many exercises it will take to burn it off.

How Many Calories are in Halloween Candy?

Halloween candy usually comes in smaller packages, but even “fun-size” candy bars can hold “king-size” calories. While I don’t know what your favorite candy (i.e. biggest weakness) is, here are the common candies sold during Halloween and the calorie count that comes with them:

Snickers (Fun Size): 80 calories per bar

3 Musketeers (Fun Size): 63 calories per bar

Kit Kat (Fun Size): 70 calories per pack

Milky Way (Fun Size): 80 calories per bar

Almond Joy (Fun Size): 80 calories per bar

Butterfinger (Fun Size): 100 calories per bar

Twix (Fun Size): 80 calories per bar

M&Ms (Fun Size): 73 calories per pack

York Peppermint Patty: 140 per one

Skittles (Fun Size): 60 calories per pack

Tootsie Roll: 23 calories per mini

Candy Corn: 100 calories per one ounce

Now that you know the calorie count per candy, it is time to determine exercises to burn off Halloween candy calories.

Exercises to Burn Off Halloween Candy Calories.

In general, the amount of calories burned during exercise depends largely on the overall body weight of the person exercising. Those who weigh less will burn fewer calories per exercise than those who weigh more.  For an average adult weighing between 120 and 180 pounds, here is your Halloween candy calorie comparison to exercises to burn off what was consumed:

Walking

An average adult burns between 65-100 calories per mile walked. So, depending on your body weight, if you decide to have three fun-size Snicker bars (240 calories) this Halloween, you will need to walk briskly for about three miles to burn off the calories consumed.

Running

An average adult burns between 11-17 calories per minute ran. So, depending on your body weight, if you decide to have one fun-size Twix bar (80 calories), a handful of Candy Corn (100 calories), and two Almond Joy bars (160 calories), you will need to go on a 25-minute post-Halloween run to burn off the calories consumed.

Jumping Jacks

On average, 10 minutes of jumping jacks can burn about 100 calories. So, that’s 10 minutes of jumping jacks for every fun-size Butterfinger bar (100 calories) and 10 minutes for every handful of Candy Corn (100 calories) you snack on this Halloween.

Burpees

100 Burpees results in about 50 calories burned on average. That means it will take you 100 burpees just to burn off two mini Tootsie Rolls (46 calories).

Weight Training

Depending on your starting weight and the intensity of your workout, weight training can burn between 180-266 calories per hour. This means an hour in the gym after some candy consumption will burn off one fun-size pack of M&Ms (73 calories) and a York Peppermint Patty (140 calories).

Tips for Being Intentional and Wise on Halloween Night

Now, I’m not sharing these numbers to discourage you. If you have already been snacking on Halloween candy, there is no need to feel ashamed or disappointed in yourself. But now you have the information you need to make wise candy choices moving forward.  Your health and fitness goals are important, and you deserve to have the knowledge necessary to make choices that align with your goals. On Halloween--and during the holiday season in general--it can be extremely difficult to stay on track. If you are struggling with Halloween candy, you are not alone. Here are five tips on how to stay on track with your fitness goals and enjoy a sweet treat this Halloween.

  1. Choose Your Candy Wisely

Now that you know how many calories are in common types of Halloween candies, you can intentionally choose what candy you want--what calories are worth it. And you can intentionally choose which exercises you are going to do later to burn off the extra calories consumed.

  1. Don’t Skip Your Weekly Exercise

Speaking of exercise, don’t skip it. During Halloween, with all that candy around you and consumed, it can be easy to become discouraged. And when we become discouraged, it is a lot harder to get motivated to accomplish our weekly fitness goals.  But here’s the thing: you will feel so much better about yourself--inside and out--when you choose to stick to your fitness routine, even though your diet may be off track for a few days.

  1. Limit Yourself and Stick to It

Give yourself a Halloween candy limit. If you want to enjoy a few pieces with your children or grandchildren, go for it. But keep in mind that you are only going to have X amount, and don’t go reaching back into the bag once you’ve reached your limit.

  1. Don’t Let the Candy Linger

One of the worst things you can do to yourself when you are trying to stay on track with your health and fitness goals is have bad food--like Halloween candy--around the house. If it is in your house you are more likely to eat it. So, once Halloween is over and the festivities conclude, throw out any remaining candy! Trust me, you’ll thank yourself for it later.

  1. Choose Healthy Food Options Alongside the Candy

Even if you have X amount of candy on Halloween night--and even if you go overboard--don’t stop eating healthy food options throughout the day. Halloween is not an “all or nothing” night. Choose to stay creative and healthy in the kitchen, even when you know you will snack on a few pieces of candy for dessert.
