We may be winding down from summer, but vacations are and will always be on the upcoming calendar. We all love (and need) a little time off from the daily grind and our goals are to come back feeling rested, relaxed, and refreshed. What ends up happening however is we throw our healthy eating habits to the side and treat ourselves to all the junk food vacation has to offer. We end up coming home feeling terrible, tired, and ten steps behind where we were before vacation. Does this sound familiar? So how DO we enjoy vacation without the guilt of overindulging? Below are 5 ways to keep up with your nutrition and stay on track on you next get away.
Eat your Protein
Protein is a macro nutrient that not only helps with muscle repair, but it can make you feel full longer. Be sure to eat protein every time you eat. This can be animal or plant based proteins and totally up to you.
Be Mindful of How your Food is Cooked
A perk of vacation is not having to cook and eating out is a luxury we all enjoy. Lots of restaurants offer “healthy” options but they may have hidden calories we don’t need. Breaded fish, cooking oils, heavy sauces, and dressings are just a few things to avoid. Look for grilled, steamed, or “naked” options. Don’t be shy asking how your food is prepared or even requesting to have something cooked differently. Save the calories for a delicious dessert instead.
Eat the Rainbow
Eat those fruits and veggies! It sure is easy to grab the chips and unhealthy snack foods while on vacation, but it is just as easy to grab a piece of fruit instead. Start with your rainbow and combine with protein first, THEN you can add the other stuff. Filling up on the healthy, colorful foods leaves less room for the junk.
ENJOY your Vacation
The most important thing is to relax and enjoy your time away! Choosing your nutrition well is the best laid plan to coming home feeling amazing, refreshed, and ready to get back to your regularly scheduled program.
